Summary:
The approved State of North Carolina 2026-2027 budget included funding for “Local Law Enforcement Bonus”. Each sworn local law enforcement officer employed as a sworn officer on June 30, 2026, is eligible to receive a compensation bonus in the amount of one thousand seven hundred fifty dollars ($1,750), payable as close as is practicable to October 15, 2026. The budget statute requires the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) to administer and award these local law enforcement compensation bonuses as provided by the budget statute. In preparing for the disbursement of these bonuses, staff from Police and Finance have been communicating with personnel with SBI. It is necessary for the City of Lexington to accept and record the funding from SBI to process these bonuses.
This Ordinance provides budgetary authority to administer the Local Law Enforcement Officer Compensation Bonus Program on behalf of the State of North Carolina. Total compensation will be in the amount of $97,735.44, received as Public Safety revenue and expensed through Police Department salaries and wages; 51 full-time sworn officers and 2 part-time sworn officers will receive the compensation bonus.

AMENDMENT TO THE ANNUAL BUDGET FOR FISCAL YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 2027 RELATED TO THE GENERAL FUND RELATED TO BUDGETARY AUTHORITY TO ADMINISTER THE LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER COMPENSATION BONUS PROGRAM
BE IT ORDAINED by the City Council of the City of Lexington, North Carolina that the following amendment be made to the annual budget ordinance for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2027:
Section 1. To amend the General Fund, the appropriations are to be changed as follows:

Section 3. Copies of this budget amendment shall be furnished to the Clerk to the City Council, and to the Budget Officer and the Chief Financial Officer for their direction.
